中国册封室町3代将军足利义满为日本国王后,“日本国王”就成了中国、韩国对日本掌权者的称呼,比如室町15代将军足利义昭收到的韩国国书的收信人是日本国王,日韩就壬辰倭乱和谈期间的韩国国书也称呼德川家康为日本国王。有时也能看见日本统治者用“日本国王”对外自称。

江户3代将军德川家光时期,将日本国王称号改成日本大君,江户6代将军德川家宣时期,儒学家·新井白石觉得日本大君这个称呼被韩国占了便宜,因为当时韩国国王的儿子也叫大君,于是改回了曾经的日本国王,但是后来在江户8代将军德川吉宗时期被改回日本大君。

黑船来航后,大君这个称呼随着欧美人一起传到了国外,英语将其音译为“tycoon [taɪˈkun]”。有人认为大君(日语读音:tai kun)是抗日战争期间的“太君”的语源。
